Fourth, disobedience of one’s oath is not permitted. We can find this opinion in James 5:12: “But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath; but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.” When Hester Prynne was in prison, she promised her husband not to tell his real identity to others and swore. However, several years later, she disobeys her oath and tells the secret to the minister. As a punishment to this, the minister, who Hester loves so deeply, dies the very day they’ve decided to flee away.

Fifth, Hester’s final result is death. However, it never means expiration. Long years after the revelation of the scarlet letter, Hester returns to the land again with the token still on her breast. For all the charities she has done, people’s attitudes towards her change. They begin to try to accept her. Regards the scarlet letter “A”, some people treat is as “Able” and even others say it means “Angel”. In the lapse of the helpful, thoughtful and self-devoted years that make up Hester’s final years, the scarlet letter ceases to be a stigma which stands for only scorn and bitterness, and becomes a type of something to be sorrowed over, and treated with awe, yet with reverence too. Unfortunate people even come to her to seek advice on how to release from the sufferings. And Hester always dose her best to try to ease their agony. After death, Hester was buried near Dimmesdale and with the scarlet letter “A” on her gravestone. For so many years’ sufferings and atonement, she finally receives God’s forgiveness. Her death means God’s permit to let her go to the heaven where she can begin new life. It is because before her death, she has made many efforts to make up for her sin, especially her firm belief in God. God is benevolent and fair and willing to help and save the degenerated soul. Death ends her sinful past and gives her an opportunity to lead a new pure life. It’s all God’s blessing.
